PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen)

As men age, they are progressively at higher risk for prostate disease such as BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) or prostate cancer.  This PSA test will measure the level of prostate specific antigen in your blood and is one of the best methods available for monitoring your overall prostate health.

The prostate gland is an important part of the male reproductive system and lies in front of the rectum and just below the bladder.  It is about the size of a walnut and produces the liquid part of semen that transports sperm.  Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland that is measurable in the blood through laboratory analysis.  An excess amount of PSA could be an indication of a serious health problem and should be further evaluated by a  physician.

Once past age 50, most men eventually experience some degree of prostate problem, usually coming in the form of one or more urinary symptoms.   But even without symptoms, as men age, they are progressively at higher risk for prostate disease such as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) or prostate cancer.  This PSA Test will measure the level of prostate specific antigen in the blood and is one of the best methods available for monitoring overall prostate health.

The American Urological Association recommends that all men over the age of 40 receive an annual prostate evaluation consisting of a PSA test and a physician ordered digital rectal exam.  African American men, and those with a family history of prostate disease, are at a higher risk for prostate cancer and should begin testing even earlier.
